Please join Troy Community Works! and listen to local author Joanne Duke Gamblee talk about her book “The Dam Battle” on July 30that 7pm at the Troy Hayner Center. Learn how the residents of Troy and Miami County initially opposed the building of the levees we’ve become so familiar with and hear what went right and what went wrong asDayton leaders tried to build consensus around the dam project that changed the face of the Miami Valley. Come early and enjoy dinner in Troy! This wonderful book chronicles the history of the Miami Valley’s unique levee and dam system while detailing the public protests and consensus building that had to take place. “We are so excited to have a historian of Joanne’s quality here in Troy,” said Martha Harris, Executive Director of Troy Community Works!, “Her previous books have been wonderful to read and enrich our knowledge of local history . The Dam Battle also includes the struggles of building public consensus, which is critical for any planning project.”

The Dam Battle talk will be held at the Troy Hayner Cultural Center at 301 West Main Street, Troy, OH 45373. Mrs. Gamblee will begin her talk at 7pm. The cost of this event is $3 per person or $5 per couple, however participants can come for FREE by showing a receipt that they dined at a local Troy restaurant that day. THE DAM BATTLE:
“Not in MY backyard cried property owners after the flood of 1913, when they learned they could be required to give up land for dam sites with miles of empty basins.  Besides, dam’s break.  Lives were in danger.  They couldn’t believe their ears.  Their bitter anger lasted five years and came close to scuttling the innovative plan which protects communities in southwestern Ohiofrom disastrous floods.  Learn about this history of the project, the opposition and hear essays on the many moods of the Miami River and the people around it.”

2009 Troy Strawberry Festival

Troy Strawberry Festival June 6-7, 2009TROY celebrates its place as the center of Ohio’s strawberry production by hosting the Troy Strawberry Festival the first weekend of June.

Although there are pre-festival events which take place in May, the Strawberry Festival officially begins on a Friday night with food and entertainment in Troy’s downtown square. Two full days of events follow beginning with the Festival Parade through the city on Saturday morning. From there the main action occurs on the levee along the Great Miami River, with additional events taking place at Troy’s Memorial Stadium, Hobart Arena, and several city parks. Featured are the strawberries, of course, and they come in all sorts of taste-tempting treats from shortcake to donuts to strawberry pie; but also to be enjoyed are the many arts and crafts booths, the athletic competitions, and the entertainment.

The Festival is more than just a weekend of fun. It serves as a major fund-raising event for many of the area’s civic and charitable groups. Committees work year-round to prepare for the weekend when as many as 150,000 people come to Troy to take part in our world class parade and festival.
